Guest guest
Hello All, The Review of the Dog Act 1976 in Western Australia is underway. Any submissions to help the Government here reach humane and correct conclusions about the issues involved would really help dogs in our State. Submissions are due in by 2nd September 2002 A copy of the issues paper is at http://www.dlgrd.wa.gov.au/dog-act-review.htm The document is downloadable in MS Word or PDF format. If you live in Australia, you can also write in for a copy of the issues paper to The Department of Local Government and Regional Development Ph (08) 9222.0511 Fax (08) 9221.2715 I have included SOME of the issues (NOT ALL) from my hard copy of the issues paper and these include *Should an authorised person be given the power to seize a dog if it has not been registered? *Should registration requirements be changed to recognise the current veterinary practice of not sterilising dogs until they are at least 6 months old? If so, how should these requirements be changed? *Should guard dogs be separately registered? *Should an authorised person or police officer be able to enter any premises for the purpose of seizing an unregistered dog? *Should the minimum 72 hour (3 day) period during which the local government must keep and maintain an impounded dog be increased? What would be an appropriate minimum period? *Are the defences in the Dog Act in relation to dog attacks adequate? Should other defences be added? *Should a dog attack on wildlife be included as an offence? *Should any defences be removed? *How should the defintions of barking nuisance be defined to make provisions more efective in dealing with these types of complaints? *Should local governments be required to follow a particular method for the destruction of dogs. *Should modified penalties apply to a person who wilfully causes harm to a dog? *Should dog owners rather than their dogs be licensed. *Should minimum housing and excercise requirements be provided for in the Act? *How should dingoes and dingo crosses be controlled in Western Australia.? There are also many other questions about registration fees, fencing, microchipping, rights of appeal, possibly banning people from owning dogs in some instances and raising the ceiling of $2000 modified penalty. Kind regards, Marguerite
