The animal lovers from Sungai Petani saved the camel after they came up with RM10,000 — the amount the PTA had wanted to raise. SMK Khir Johari PTA secretary Yaacob Mat Zin said a representative of the group, L.T. Loke, came up with the money on July 13 when the animal was to have been slaughtered together with another camel. Yaacob said the association initially wanted to raise RM20,000 from the two camels they bought from a Johor Baru-based company which imported the animals from Australia. “Following Loke’s appeals, the PTA decided to spare one of the camels,” he told reporters when the camel arrived at its new home in Taiping Zoo here yesterday. Also present were Taiping Zoo director Dr Kevin Lazarus, SMK Khir Johari PTA assistant secretary Anuar Fadzil Abu Bakar and Loke. “We could not spare both animals as we have received deposits from the public who wanted to taste camel meat,” said Yaacob, adding that the association had offered to sell the camel meat at RM40 a kg. Anuar Fadzil said the association had aimed to raise RM20,000 from the fund-raising event but with the RM10,000 donation from the animal lovers, they raised more than RM20,000. ”With the amount, most of the projects we planned to undertake in the near future will be realised,” he said. <!-- Page: 3 --> ________________________ Your one-stop information portal: The Star Online http://thestar.com.my http://biz.thestar.com.my http://classifieds.thestar.com.my http://cards.thestar.com.my http://search.thestar.com.my http://star-motoring.com http://star-space.com http://star-jobs.com http://star-ecentral.com http://star-techcentral.com 1995-2002 Star Publications (Malaysia) Bhd.
