Guest guest
According to the news report posted by Ms Dewar, an adult would be required to pay US$330 to see these gorillas! (exchange rates as quoted in article). According to the US definition of a " billion " , the upkeep of the gorillas equates to US$1 003 878.62 PER DAY ! (1.1 billion US$ over 3 years). Surely this cannot be correct? If these figures are correct, then no wonder third world countries are starving when gorillas in their natural habitat feed themselves for nothing. Guest guest
Roger and others ... My husband, the genius, had the same reaction to the figures quoted in the story and did the math, using today's bank rates of exchange to come up with the following: > Sutiyoso revealed that the Gibbon Foundation, which initiated the > procurement of the giant apes, has granted Rp 10 billion (US$1.1 billion) > for the feeding and upkeep of the gorillas over three years. Just so you know, I looked up the current exchange rates, and I was correct in thinking that 10billion Rp was US $1.1million, not billion!! Even so, when people are starving, orangutans and gibbons are being slaughtered and habitat lost, it's a helluva lotta money for 4 gorillas. And this, coming from a gorilla fan who thinks nothing's too good for gorillas! ;-) Jane Dewar Founder Gorilla Haven www.gorilla-haven.org - " Whiskers " <whiskers <aapn > Wednesday, July 10, 2002 12:35 PM Two Jakarta Gorilla Stories > According to the news report posted by Ms Dewar, > an adult would be required to pay US$330 to see > these gorillas!
