Guest guest
Can anyone out there confirm a report I received that the 4 male gorillas from Howletts have actually arrived at Ragunan Zoo in Jakarta, Indonesia (circa July 8th)?? With the Nigeria-Malaysia gorilla scam, I suppose we should be pleased these 4 gorillas really were legitimately captive-born and their transfer to Indonesia was by the books. But I'm still concerned for their future and will say again, what I've said privately to Willie Smits and Damian Aspinall, principles involved in this transfer: I hope these 4 gorillas live a long, healthy and happy life in Jakarta, helping to educate not only the local people, but the world, about the plight of gorillas in the wild, as well as in captivity. And in the memory of BIJU, the Howletts-born young silverback sold to Ueno Zoo in Japan, where he died under unclear circumstances, I hope Howletts and their counterparts at Ragunan, will ensure the safety and well-being of these 4 gorillas now and into the future. I still don't understand how gorillas going to Jakarta will help gorillas, as individuals or as a species, nor do I see how they will help send a conservation message to help Indonesia's own extremely endangered species. But clearly the government of Indonesia and the parties involved believe this is a good deal. And at least now, the world knows and can watch over these 4 gorillas, so they don't end up like BIJU.
