Troublesome monkeys to be relocated

By HAMDAN RAJA ABDULLAH

MUAR: The Wildlife and National Parks Department has trapped about 100 monkeys

from a coastal village here & #150; to be relocated to Maukil forest, near Bukit

Kepong & #150; over the past two weeks.

Muar Wildlife and National Parks officer Maskan Kaswadi said the animals were

among several hundred monkeys, which had been causing problems to residents in

Kampung Seri Pantai.

& #147;The village is located close to a mangrove swamp and the place is overrun

with monkeys which are not afraid of people.

& #147;They would enter people & #146;s homes to look for food while the bigger

ones would even run off with the rice pots and other food containers into the

swampy area, & #148; he told reporters after trapping 13 monkeys yesterday.

Maskan said the villagers could no longer tolerate the monkeys and they

complained to Muar MP Dr Robia Kosai who allocated two traps to the village last

month.

The traps, huge boxes of metal sheets, each measuring about 3m high and 1.5m

wide with a door on one side, were set up at two strategic spots in the village,

he said.

He said they then put fruits and coconuts inside the box to attract the monkeys

and managed to trap over 90 monkeys so far and relocated them to the forest near

Bukit Kepong.
