Steritech Fences go up after Protest Camp removed - more action! Tue, 25 Jun 2002 11:03:36 +1000 ENuFF – Everyone for a Nuclear Free Future – Brisbane NARANGBA (STOP FOOD IRRADIATION) CAMPAIGN UPDATE Tuesday, June 25, 2002 10:30am As I write, a fence is being erected around the site of the proposed Steritech irradiation plant. Numerous police and security guards are present and a small band of protesters and locals are witnessing the eventfrom across the road. Reports from the protest camp site earlier this morning say that there was a beautiful rainbow over the two trees which are to be knocked down to build the Cobalt-60 containment pool. The area is a wildlife corridor which sits adjacent to an endangered (and " protected " ) paper bark wetland. After removal of the on-site protest camp yesterday, a new camp is being set up across the road. The camp is very organised and clean - with a kitchen area, wash up area, living room and more! Spirits remain high as locals rally support bringing food, materials, equipment and company. The mood is positive and people are proud to have got TV coverage on every channel locally and national radio coverage as well with a peaceful powerful protest - well done everyone! A FENCE IS NOT GOING TO STOP US STOPPING THIS PLANT!!!! Please come stay at our camp or just drop in for a visit and a cup of tea! Across the street from LOT 14, POTASSIUM ST DECEPTION BAY (within the Narangba Industrial Estate) Don't forget the BAN Bike Ride coming up this Saturday (June 29 from Brisbane to Narnagba - but you can join in along the way - call Tali 3342 7294) and the STERITECH INFO NIght July , 6pm, at the Narnagba Communty Hall (cnr., Mackie Road and Burpengary Road) Let them know that we say NO! Other actions on site and in Brisbane coming up -OR why not design your own!?!? For more info: Robin 0411 11 8737 Below is a media release released after the camp was broken up. Media Release- June 24, 2002 Action heats up as Narangba protest camp is removed Three people were arrested this morning as police dismantled the protest camp located on the site of the proposed nuclear irradiation plant at Narangba, Queensland. A 100 strong crowd of campers and local residents had gathered at the site to protect the camp from being destroyed. Queensland Greens spokesperson, Drew Hutton, Narangba resident Sue Mair, and ENuFF spokesperson, Robin Taubenfeld were arrested for refusing to leave the camp which had been maintained for 10 days, during which protesters successfully stopped most work on the site. After “moving on” the crowd, police and security guards removed tents, kitchen facilities and other camp structures allowing for construction to commence on the site. Onlookers watched as heavy machinery began clearing the area to make way for a fence and entrance to the plant. Queenslanders, including Queensland Greens’ Drew Hutton, have once stopped Steritech building an irradiation plant in the region and protesters believe they can do it again. The earlier plant, proposed for the Rocklea markets in the 80’s, was stopped well after construction had begun on the site. Protest spirits, therefore, remain high, with protesters vowing to continue their vigil until the Narangba Steritech plant is stopped. They have set up an alternate camp across the road at which a constant presence is being maintained. Further protest action is expected. A community bicycle ride ending with a vigil on the site, is being planned for Saturday, June 29. The B.A.N. – Bikes Against Nukes cycle will travel from Brisbane up to Narangba Industrial Estate, through regions along the Cobalt-60 transportation route. The cycle will highlight Brisbane and regional connections to the plant and to the fight to see it stopped.
