Guest guest
Fwd... Hi , R. writes >> haven't been riding to hounds much lately. However, I think bunny should remember that foxes are indigenous to Britain and, as such, are part of the natural environment and doing no harm. In Oz they are just another introduced pest killing our own wildlife. All animals, except humans, seem to breed least when there is little food around - and there is little food for foxes after they have killed out the small natives. ++European settlers are also introduced species and they are doing more harm to the environment and killing more native species than any fox or competitor wild introduced animal. Yet the some Australian Government officials want to increase the human population in Australia to astronomical proportions in the name of economic growth, profit and such. I don't see the foxes, rabbits and wild pigs jumping on tractors and clearing hectares of rainforest land in Queensland. Nor do I see them doing as much damage to the environment and Australian animals as the farming of beef and sheep etc and introduced crops such as cotton. Try looking at the big picture before you target any other species introduced by European settlers into Australia. I know of some Queenslanders who would like to kill all the fruit bats because they fear the Lyssa virus carried by bats there will kill humans and I know of others who hate kangaroos and still more who see kangaroos as meat rather than animals. Targeting one animal species over another is " specieism " akin to racism. Where there are problem areas that have to be dealt with, humane animal welfare concerns should be at the top of the list, not at the bottom. >>Does bunny also approve of feral cats? Wild pigs? Carp? New Zealanders do have to try and control possums. ++ " Feral cats " are pet cats dumped in the bush or neglected by humans. Farmers even let cats go in the bush to kill rabbits and mice etc at some periods during Australian history. Therefore for this human stupidity and neglect, these species should suffer torturous deaths? Perhaps R., you are a friend of Monty the TV weather man who supposedly tried to kill a Carp by repeatedly stamping on it (but it refused to die) on air while he was doing a segment on the countryside here. Did you here the anecdote about the crocodile hunter who put the shot but still live and kicking wild pig in a net and hung it above the waters edge to catch the crocodile? I suppose this cruelty does not worry you but it does worry me. Animals have the same ability to suffer as you or I (they have a central nervous system and feel fear and pain). >>Any removal should be as humane as possible, and " sport " is a very unattractive (weird people) option, but removal of foxes from Oz would be wonderful. ++I would rather see humans removed and that would solve a lot of problems wouldn't it? Perhaps cattle, sheep and other animals raised for meat could be phased out as well. As for " weird people " , you are making excuses for sadists. Teenagers who wish to go " bunny bashing " for fun for the weekend or people with bows and arrows who want live targets. Blood sports are cruel and obnoxious. Don't try and legitimise cruelty in the name of specieism or conservation. >>Actually " sport " has been the most successful way so far in getting rid of wild pigs, so it may be possible to use these weird people for the public good. ++Pity the wild pigs who didn't ask to be here in the first place. Did you see the TV segment about the woman who fought her local council to keep her pet pigs and won? She had them sleeping on beds in the house and she implied they were as intelligent as dogs. Aren't humans " weird " wanting to kill and maim some animal species on the one hand and make " pets " and " exhibits " of them in zoos and circuses on the other. It seems the human race has a particular trait of being nasty that exceeds any implied " nasty traits " in other species. Kind regards, Marguerite
