A T-56 gun was found with them .They have been hunting animals for a long period in this reserve area. On the 1st of June in Madawachiya one young tusker was shot down by an army deserter and 4 Gramarakshaka . Gramarakshaka are the guards who protect villages from terrorist attack. After the gun shot injury the young tusker was fataly injured and other elephants were helping it to walk up to Udumbugala. The herd of elephants were protecting the injured elephant till dawn and went into the forest. In the morning these barberic hunters shot the elephant and even then as it was not dying they have cutone tusk.Police officers informed the department of wild life and the tusker was alive at that time. They managed to find the killers and they confessed how they have killed the elephant. It was repored that the wild life veterinary surgeon came very late and at that time elephant was dead. Minister of Agriculure S.B Dissanayake has decided to give guns to farmers to protect their crops from wild boars. The Kobbekaduwa Africulture Research Institute has decided that after the discussions with farmers. It would be so tragic then these people and the other officers will kill all the wild animals. Please send a letter to the Prime minister to change the law and increase the fines and imprisonment.Guns should not be given to the farmers. There are people who have encroached in side the protected Wild life reserves. They should be removed from the reserves.Apart from that farmers send their Buffaloes and cattle to wild life reserves .they should be removed and should be given to farmers which are not close to reserves and religious organisations who rear cattle without killing them. e.mail pm_sec
