Tiger kills two farmers

From correspondents in Jakarta

18jun02

A TIGER has reportedly mauled two farmers to death on the Indonesian island

of Sumatra.

The men were attacked last month in a forest at Kumpeh Hulu in the central

province of Jambi, according to the report today.

The head of the local forest protection office, Agus Priambudi, detailed the

attack to the Antara news agency.

Sumatran tigers have been often sighted in the area following the logging of

the forest by a private concession holder.

Conservationists have blamed logging for shrinking the habitat of many

animals, including tigers and elephants, and for their resulting rampages.
