Guest guest
Circus tigers, lions brought to - Vizag zoo from W. Bengal. By Our Staff Reporter. 06/13/2002 The Hindu © 2002 Katsuri & Sons Ltd VISAKHAPATNAM JUNE 12. The animal rescue centre attached to the Indira Gandhi Zoological Park here received 21 tigers and nine lions, confiscated from `Famous Circus' at Bongaon in West Bengal, on Wednesday. The health condition of all the animals was reviewed by a committee of veterinary doctors. While two tigers were one-eye-blind, not one of the felines was found seriously ill and they could endure the stress of three days' journey from Bongaon, near Gopalnagar on the Bangladesh border in North 24-Parganas district of West Bengal. " Cloudy weather and intermittent rains have made the journey easier for the animals, " said Dilip Prasad, one of the officials who accompanied the big cats. The four-member health committee began inspecting the animals soon after they were shifted into their permanent enclosures with the help of a crane. They were shifted from their mobile enclosures used in the circus into a small transit enclosure and pushed into designated chambers. With the arrival of 21 tigers - eight adult male, six adult female, seven cubs (five male and two female) - the number of tigers has gone up to 23. Out of nine lions, three are male adults and three female adults, and three cubs (one male & two female) and the total number of lions has gone up to 31 at the ARC. The zoo's in-charge Curator, B. Vijay Kumar, Assistant Curators, Janakiram and Ratnachari, along with the zoo doctor, Srinivas, made all arrangements and supervised operations. Separate case-sheets were opened for all animals as no medical history of them was provided by the circus management and their ages were being assessed based on physical features. The youngest among them were two tiger cubs aged about three months and three lion cubs of about eight months. Compared to the lions and tigers that came to Visakhapatnam ARC last year, these animals looked stronger and healthier.
