A visibly emotional Kang, in her 60s, bade farewell to her Air Itam home in Penang yesterday to begin life afresh in the “middle of nowhere”. “I could stay on in Penang on my own but what would happen to my ‘children’? I can’t bear to have the authorities put them to sleep, I will do anything for the sake of my dogs,’’ she said after settling into her new home in a disused factory plot in Tekah, Kamunting. The factory area, with a guava orchard located nearby, belongs to a Taiping businessman who preferred to remain anonymous. After learning about Kang’s plight through his manager – identified only as Chew – the good Samaritan decided to allow Kang to bring her dogs to his property and stay on “for as long as they need.” Renovations to the area were hastily made to accommodate Kang’s basic needs such as a bedroom, kitchen and bathroom complete with water and electricity supply. Next to Kang’s abode, the dogs have been placed in a 0.4ha fenced-up yard which is big enough for them to move around. Kang, who made three tedious trips with the dogs from Penang to Taiping using a van, was glad to be allowed to live there. “In the past 10 years, I’ve been moving from one rented home to another in Penang because nobody could stand my ‘children’. So I thank God and this kind gentleman who has given us all a place to live for as long as we need.’’ Kang’s plight was first highlighted in January after she was issued an eviction notice to move out with all her dogs by March 1 from her rented lodgings in an abandoned mansion behind Kek Lok Si Temple, where she had been staying for the past two years. Her plight gained public attention and Kang received dog food and other forms of aid from dog lovers as far as Singapore. Kang’s sacrifice began about 20 years ago when her husband died and she had no children to care for. To ease her loneliness, she began collecting stray dogs and providing them with shelter, love and comfort like a loving mother. Although sad to leave Penang, Kang said her needs took a back seat to those of her dogs. Those who wish to contact Kang can call the manager, Chew at 019-551 4366 as she is now living on private property. <!-- Page: 11 --> ________________________ Your one-stop information portal: The Star Online http://thestar.com.my http://biz.thestar.com.my http://classifieds.thestar.com.my http://cards.thestar.com.my http://search.thestar.com.my http://star-motoring.com http://star-space.com http://star-jobs.com http://star-ecentral.com http://star-techcentral.com 1995-2002 Star Publications (Malaysia) Bhd.
