I saw some of this program last night. It was quite amazing.

There is a global system in place that can intercept every email or

phone conversation in the world.Ever wondered why they house the

scanning devices in round domes? One reason given was so people cant

see which way the receivers (like satellite dishes) are pointing. (They can

pivot different

ways). Thank goodness for the whistle blowers who educate everyone else

about these systems. These systems are also set up with very powerful

computers

that search conversations, emails etc for key words (like a search engine).

They can trace the person conversing and everything in the conversation.

7.30 AS IT HAPPENED: ECHELON: THE SECRET POWER – The surveillance network

set up during WWII between the US and the UK has gradually evolved into a

global eavesdropping set-up known as ECHELON, which includes Canada,

Australia and New Zealand and operates in great secrecy. Capable of

intercepting almost every phone conversation or email in the world, ECHELON

is now, according to this program, actively involved in industrial

espionage. The main player is the US National Security Agency (NSA), bigger

that the FBI and the CIA combined, which only reveals those scraps of

information deemed necessary to the other partners. Australia, for

instance, only gets 20% of the intelligence processed at Pine Gap. The

program looks at ECHELON experts and former intelligence agents who explain

how the network operates and the extent of its eavesdropping capacities; and

the very real threat of economic espionage posed by ECHELON to the European
