Posted: 19:35:05 (AEDT) Volunteer catchers to take bite out of Bangkok dog problem Authorities in Thailand's capital will pay volunteer dog-catchers eight baht (40 cents) per captured stray dog in an effort to sterilise and vaccinate the pesky animals. Bangkok Deputy Governor Prapan Kitisin says the volunteers will be dispatched to all 50 of the capital's districts. " We will offer trained volunteers eight baht for each dog, " he said. " The city needs to ask for cooperation from volunteers because we lack the staff to catch the dogs and vets to sterilise them. " The volunteers will form part of a recently-approved campaign to sterilise, vaccinate and microchip the 120,000 potentially rabid dogs roaming Bangkok's streets. " Without sterilisation, the stray dog population in the city would increase by 30,000 yearly, " Mr Prapan said. Stray dogs have been a perennial problem in the capital, highlighted last September when a rabid dog went on the rampage at a market and bit dozens of people before a security guard beat it to death. Around 350,000 people across Thailand were bitten by dogs considered to be potentially infected with rabies last year. A cull of the unwanted animals is deemed unacceptable in the predominantly Buddhist country. LAUNCH - Your Music Experience http://launch.
