SHAH ALAM - Blueprint to protect Port Klang's bio-diversity

by V. Shankar Ganesh

May 21: The Selangor Government is conceiving a blueprint called the

Integrated Coastal Management programme to ensure bio-diversity along the

Port Klang coastline will be protected and future development to be

environmentally friendly.

Selangor Local Government, Housing and Squatters, Environment Committee

Chairman Datuk Mohd Mokhtar Ahmad Dahlan said the blueprint was being

prepared by the Selangor Water Management Authority (Luas) with assistance

from the International Maritime Organisation.

He said IMO was involved through its Partnership in Environmental Management

of the Seas of East Asia programme and it involved the State and United

Nations agencies.

Its counter-pollution programmes will target Sungai Kelang and the

surrounding areas of Port Klang .

He was speaking to reporters after opening a one-day workshop on

" Environmental Investment and Public-Private Partnership " here today,

organised by Luas.

Mohd Mokhtar said its important for the State to have the programme because

environmental aspects couldn't be neglected as Selangor strived to become a

developed state by 2005.

" The political will to achieve this is there and this will also put us on

par with other countries on the environmental aspects. "

He said with rapid development taking place, the bio-diversity of many areas

like mangrove swamps needed to be protected.

" The level of pollution in these areas is alarming but its not too late for

us to take remedial actions. "

Under the programme, he said a zoning system would also be established for

better management and implementation.
