Dear Sir./Ms,

 

We share the horror of British groups at the genetic engineering and

cloning of animals (Age 16/5). This inhumane work is also widely in

Australia, using cows, pigs, goats, sheep, mice, rats, chickens, fish, and

humans, and their genes.

 

Yet the Office of Gene Technology Regulator (OGTR) does not assess, licence

or monitor the creation of new animals. The inhouse animal ethics and

biosafety committees which monitor the work are answerable only to their

corporate and scientific bosses.

 

The gene jugglers make animals with industrial materials, drugs, hormones

and proteins in their milk. Genetics Australia has cloned four calves, also

genetically engineered to produce 'healthier' milk, and CSIRO plans to

release millions of genetically engineered fish . Pig organs for transplant

into humans raise the spectre of new diseases. The South Australian

Research and Development Institute (SARDI) is contracted to create six

hundred goats that make human albumin in their milk, for export to China.

 

Animal genetic engineering and cloning produce few live animals, but many

abortions and gross deformities. Why does Dolly the sheep have arthritis?

Why have other animals died though they seemed healthy? Why were most

Australian animal clones recently put down?

 

Our governments must act now to halt dangerous, cruel, secret and

uncontrolled animal cloning and genetic engineering. The techniques will be

applied to us next!
