Guest guest
Present statistics revealed 3 elephants are killed in 1 weeks time in Sri Lanka .On the 14 th of May elephants were poisoned and found dead in Anuradhapura and the baby was also dying. It shows the present Director of wild life has no interest oor capable of protecting wild life and the destruction of animals have increased. Large number of tortoises were raided at Kehelwatte in Colombo city .Some of the innocent tortoises were killed and some were saved from the death. Hunting is baned in Sri lanka . Last year there were over 800 gun shot accidents as people keep traps with guns to kill wild animals in the reserves and forests .The agriculture minister of the previous government has given guns to the farmers .The new government should confiscate these guns. After the ceasefire agreement poaching has increased. Some Army and Police oficers are involved secetly .They kill Sambur and deer and various animals to supply meat to tourist hotels and Ministers inProvincial councils while they are on duty. There were incidents which were reported in l998. Government should introduce cottage industries and employment for the poor in these areas.Drug addiction and alcoholism are the other reasons for poaching. The civillians called Gramarakshaka were given guns to protect villages. They use their guns to hunt. The law should be changed to increase the fines and these officers should be removed from their services. Deapartment should start a group like endangered species protection unit to work under cover. Recently Deartment of wild life started to raid the protected species of birds which are kept in cages .It is a good thing but these animals are released immediately to the forests. They should trained to live in the wild and must be released later.I requested these Wild life top officers but they are not listening to us . If you can send an e.mail to the Prime Minister Mr Ranil Wickramsinghe requesting to introduce the poaching hot line and to do other changes that would save lot`s of animals of Sri lanka. e.mail pm_sec
