Guest guest Posted May 19, 2002 Report Share Posted May 19, 2002 The Star-Friday, May 17, 2002 'Mini hydro projects need reservoirs' KUCHING: The implementation of mini hydroelectric projects in the state has to be supported by reservoirs to ensure their uninterrupted operations, said Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr George Chan Hong Nam. He said if the projects had to depend on river water to power their turbines, they would not be able to generate electricity during the dry spell. Dr Chan, who is also Sarawak Electricity Supply Corporation chairman, was asked about a news report that a second mini hydro project in the state had failed. The report said the project in Telok Melano - a 400-strong Malay fishing coastal village in Lundu district - had failed because there was not enough water to power its turbines. The project, costing over RM10mil, was built by the Rural Development Ministry. It was reported earlier that a similar project in the Bario Highlands had been abandoned after a day in operation because the Bario river was too shallow to generate enough water for the power station. Energy, Telecommunications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Amar Leo Moggie, who visited the RM12.5mil Bario project in February, had said it should not have been implemented as it was not feasible and was a waste of public funds. -- Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
