'Mini hydro projects need reservoirs'

KUCHING: The implementation of mini hydroelectric projects in

the state has to be supported by reservoirs to ensure their uninterrupted

operations, said Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr George Chan Hong Nam.

He said if the projects had to depend on river water to power

their turbines, they would not be able to generate electricity during the dry

spell.

Dr Chan, who is also Sarawak Electricity Supply Corporation

chairman, was asked about a news report that a second mini hydro project in the

state had failed.

The report said the project in Telok Melano - a 400-strong

Malay fishing coastal village in Lundu district - had failed because there was

not enough water to power its turbines.

The project, costing over RM10mil, was built by the Rural

Development Ministry.

It was reported earlier that a similar project in the Bario

Highlands had been abandoned after a day in operation because the Bario river

was too shallow to generate enough water for the power station.

Energy, Telecommunications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Amar

Leo Moggie, who visited the RM12.5mil Bario project in February, had said it

should not have been implemented as it was not feasible and was a waste of

public funds.
