Angry jumbo kills man with a kick

By KULDEEP S. JESSY

IPOH: An orang asli was killed on the spot after being kicked on the head by

a five-tonne elephant that got cross when its slumber was disturbed by the

man’s barking dog at the Gunung Korbu forest reserve in Sungai Siput on

Saturday.

Sudin Ngah, 51, had gone there with his wife to look for rattan that morning

when the couple stumbled upon the male elephant, said Wildlife and National

Parks Department director Jasmi Abdul.

“The couple’s dog started barking at the elephant which was sleeping. The

elephant became agitated and started chasing the dog.

“It turned its attention to Sudin when the dog ran towards its master,” he

said here yesterday.

Jasmi said Sudin panicked and could not run away in time. The elephant then

kicked him in the head.

Sudin’s wife was fortunate that the elephant then turned away and left,

Jasmi said.

Sudin was believed to have died instantly, he said.

“I advise villagers near the forest reserve to be more careful so that such

an incident does not occur,” he said.

An elephant which became angry could kill a person with just one blow from

its leg, he said.

“I have seen an elephant causing a 20-year-old palm tree to tumble with just

one kick,” he added.
