Hi everyone,

We need to put more pressure on the greyhound racing industry and the

government in Australia. Please show your support for the dogs and take a few

minutes to read the following and either forward the sample letters with your

name/country to the below contacts or write your own.

Many Thanks

Raven

According to an article published Feb. 24 in The (Sydney) Sunday Telegraph,

the first shipment of greyhounds bound for South Korea was scheduled to

leave Sydney Airport March 4. The TMW Communications Group, headed by Tim

Michael, will be supplying greyhounds to Spa Corporation, which will conduct

events on a track outside of Seoul, South Korea. The track opening is

scheduled for April 13 and there will be dog racing representatives in

attendance from America, Australia, Italy, Ireland, Russia and Vietnam.

Within three years, TMW expects to be exporting 3,000 greyhounds a year to

Korea to supply four additional racetracks.

Sample letter to the Australian ministers and the Australian greyhound

racing industry-To ban the export of greyhounds to Asia

Dear Sir,

I was horrified to discover that greyhounds are being exported for the

purpose of racing to Asia. Due to the surplus of greyhounds, there is a

rehoming problem in countries

such as the United Kingdom, the USA and even in Australia. Imagine the scale

of the problem in Asia where they have neither the infrastructure nor the

incentive to rehome these dogs. No doubt they will end up adding to the

hideous dog meat industry, whereby the dogs suffer unmentionable cruelty

before and during slaughter.

Recently Korea has made world-wide headlines and has been condemned for

their barbaric treatment of dogs and there refusal to enforce the minimum

animal protection laws. FIFA has demanded that the Korean government stop the

slaughter of companion animals before the World Cup 2002, so far this has

fallen on deaf ears. In case you are not familiar with the methods of

slaughter of dogs, they include being hung by the throat until they have peed

every last drop of urine and blood out of there dying bodies. Then whilst

they are still half alive they are skinned and using a blowtorch they are

roasted. The Koreans falsely believe that by beating and causing maximum

suffering and fear to the dogs that it will make the meat taste better. This

is a country that is in the process of introducing greyhound racing with the

dogs being exported from Australia. The Australian Quarantine Services have

confirmed that in

2001, 200 greyhounds were sent to Korea.

What will become of the puppies that fail the grade?

What will become of the injured and retired greyhounds that have ceased to be

useful?

They claim that it is only a particular breed of dog that is eaten in Korea,

called a 'yellow dog.' But if you have the stomach to go to these markets

you will see evidence of greyhounds suffering along with all breeds of dogs

stuffed into

cages waiting to be beaten to death for human consumption.

Needless to say you are already aware that greyhound racing is underway in

Macao and Vietnam and again the dogs are coming from Australia. They admit to

the killing of greyhounds that are not fit for racing. So why are there plans

to create a further network of tracks throughout Vietnam, Cambodia,

Philippines and China?

The treatment of these dogs are abhorrent. It is unacceptable to send them to

places where they will endure unmentionable suffering and death.

I urge you to immediately stop the exportation of greyhounds to Asia. I can

assure you that the civilised world will not tolerate such abuse. I await

your urgent response and immediate action.

Yours respectfully

Dear Mr. Choi Dong Jun,

Re: Slaughter of Dogs & Cats for Human Consumption Korea

Proposed Greyhound Racing Korea

I write to make the strongest protest against the plans to breed and race

greyhounds in Korea, and wish you to know that we will do everything in our

power here in the UK, to prevent this from going ahead.

The ideas put forward, on the Greyhound Racing Association in Korea's Website

for when their racing days are over, are not only extremely vague, but also

shows the total ignorance that they have to this specific breed of dog.

Greyhounds will most certainly not be suitable for Mountain Rescue, as they

are sight hounds, not sniffer or scent hounds. Who will pay for the training

of these dogs? How many dogs will it be practical for groups to handle? How

many dogs are expected to leave the racing industry annually? The racing

industry cannot cope adequately now for ex-racing greyhounds, without Korea

adding to the dire situation for these dogs.

The ramifications of the expected fate of these dogs when their racing

careers are finished, is obvious to the intelligence of decent minded people.

The shameful lack of animal protection laws, and any enforcement of those

laws being undertaken within Korea now, is of major concern to us. Especially

when domestic animals are already being hideously butchered illegally in

their thousands, for human consumption.

The implications of the same barbarity for greyhounds will be exploited to

its full, especially if the current pending change in the law allows domestic

animals to be classified as livestock. This further holocaust of obscene

suffering will continue unabated, because of easy financial gain, exasperated

due to a change in legislation.

This shameful and disgusting cruelty of butchery and slaughter must stop, and

you can be assured, that Korea will continue to be exposed, and boycotted

throughout the world, if greyhound racing is introduced, and if these dogs

are abused, tortured or killed. Also, if the existing law is changed allowing

domestic animals to be classified as livestock.

We therefore urge your Government, to amend the Animal Protection Act of 1991

to include language explicitly prohibiting the slaughter of dogs and cats for

human consumption.

Yours sincerely

Signed------------
