Toh’s letter No violence against animals (Speaking Up, April 30). The writer says that people go vegetarian “primarily because they are against violence to animals”. This implies that abattoirs are daily perpetrating violence on animals. I think it is more correct to say that vegetarians are “against the killing of any life form” as Wong Nelson points out in his letter, Compassion is the key (Speaking Up, April 30). For you may be against violence to animals, say in the context of circus animals, the care of pets and in your daily encounter with animals, yet be a great lover of meat. One needs to differentiate the notion of violence to animals and the slaughter of animals for consumption. My article, One man’s meat (April 19) was written in the context of the consumption of meat. And what about those who go vegetarian for health reasons? Do they also do it because they are against violence to animals? Certainly, in vegetarian practice, one’s conscience is clear as long as no animals are killed. The issue in question is the need to want your vegetarian fare to taste like meat. No killing, no violence, yet you find it difficult to get rid of this taste for meat. This is what I meant when I said one should not separate the practice from the essence.
