Smuggled tortoises, pythons seized

RANTAU PANJANG: Two hundred and three tortoises and 12 pythons, believed to be

headed for the cooking pot, were seized by the 8th Battalion of the General

Operations Force here on Saturday.

According to the deputy commanding officer of the battalion, Deputy Supt Md

Rusli Mat Junus, they could have been smuggled into Malaysia from a neighbouring

country.

" A police team on patrol found the items in the van, and a woman, believed to be

of Thai descent, had been detained,'' said DSP Rusli, adding that the animals

had been handed over to the Wildlife Department.

In two other unrelated incidents, the battalion also seized nearly 59 tonnes of

smuggled rice valued at RM88,425 from two warehouses around Kota Baru and Pasir

Mas on the same day.
