Guest guest
The Star Sunday, April 28, 2002 Gorillas acquired legally, says zoo PENANG: Taiping Zoo has acquired four rare baby gorillas from Nigeria through a zoo exchange programme and not from a wildlife trafficker for RM6mil as claimed by certain parties, zoo director Dr Kevin Lazarus said. He said the gorillas were brought into Malaysia with all the proper documents. " We will soon be sending tigers, sun bears and other animals to the Nigerian zoo in exchange for the gorillas, " he said in a telephone interview yesterday. The International Primates Protection League and Sahabat Alam Malaysia had accused the zoo of illegally acquiring the gorillas. Dr Lazarus said the accusations were absurd, adding that the zoo only had to foot transportation costs but " it was nowhere near the RM6mil mark. " He said the young primates, one male and three females, arrived at the zoo in January and were adapting well to their new environment. " The gorillas are still in quarantine. We have not decided when to put them on public display, " he said.
