Comment from sender: Part II of pig culling Under News Brief: Isa: Pigs had to be culled SEREMBAN: The state government acted in the interest of the majority when it decided to proceed with the culling of pigs reared illegally at Tanah Merah Site A and C near Port Dickson on Monday, said Mentri Besar Tan Sri Mohd Isa Samad. Many villagers from both the areas wanted the authorities to put a stop to the illegal farming activities there, he told reporters after chairing the state Islamic Council’s finance committee meeting here yesterday. The culling operation, which began at about 8am yesterday, was initially met with some resistance from farmers who wanted more time to dispose of the animals. However, by about 11am, some of the farmers had agreed to slaughter the animals themselves instead of having them shot by the department staff. State veterinary services director Dr Majid Awang, who was at Tanah Merah Site A to oversee the operation, said the department had managed to destroy 32 pigs. “According to our initial report, there are between 300 and 400 pigs at Tanah Merah Site A and C,” he said. Dr Majid told state DAP chief Tan Kok Wa, who was also present, that sufficient notification had been given to the farmers. He said farmers were given until March 25 to get rid of their animals, but there were some who had refused to do so and were still rearing them up till now. The state government, he said, had decided that the pigs should be culled and the department was just carrying out its duty. “They cannot say that the government or the department is cruel and inhuman. “We gave them until March 25 and then extended the date to March 27 and it is now already the end of April,” he said. <!-- Page: 15 --> ________________________ Your one-stop information portal: The Star Online http://thestar.com.my http://biz.thestar.com.my http://classifieds.thestar.com.my http://cards.thestar.com.my http://search.thestar.com.my http://star-motoring.com http://star-space.com http://star-jobs.com http://star-ecentral.com http://star-techcentral.com 1995-2002 Star Publications (Malaysia) Bhd.
