UPDATE

Greyhounds exported to South Korea as food.

ANIMALS IN PRINT HAS BEEN INVOLVED IN THE CAMPAIGN TO STOP THE HIDEOUS DOG /

CAT MEAT INDUSTRY IN SOUTH KOREA FOR YEARS. YOU MAY READ ALL ABOUT THIS

ILLEGAL BUSINESS IN OUR FORMER ISSUE:

There's a Dog In the Stew: <A

Now greyhounds are being exported to South Korea as another source of dog

meat. We must act quickly to stop this horror.

INFORMATION JUST IN:

I was sent the following by Animals Australia after asking for their

assistance in stopping the export of greyhound to Vietnam, Korea etc. They

have shown great concern and have initiated action. If you could kindly

circulate the following and for everyone to write a letter of protest at the

export of greyhounds to Asia highlighting no amount of propaganda will

disguise the fact that the greyhounds will add to the hideous dog meat

industry in these countries and that there is great opposition to this. Maybe

you could send them pictures of the suffering of dogs in Korea. Could you

please also send a copy of your letter to Helen at <A

enquiries</A>. This is a first step to stopping the export

of greyhounds to Asia. Please help put the pressure on.

CONFIRMATION

(The photo above and the one to the right show the fate of these dogs.)

We've had it confirmed (by Australian Quarantine Inspection Services) that

200 greyhounds were exported from Australia to Korea in the 2001 calendar

year and none to Japan. Unfortunately they are not able to divulge details to

me. I have also written to the federal government requesting that they

impose a moratorium on the export - at least until such time as the welfare

of these dog can be guaranteed.

(By comparison, to the left and below are photos of a rescued greyhound,

Ozzie, living as a member of the family, and sleeping on the sofa with Seth.)

My enquiries to each of the state greyhound racing authorities has uncovered

that they will be conducting a CEO's conference in March 2002 and the topic

of exporting greyhounds will be discussed at this meeting. I have informed

these authorities that there is international concern about this issue and I

wonder if both yourselves and your American counterpart could write to each

state authority? This would show them that this is something that will

attract international condemnation and is not just something that Animals

Australia has concerns about.

I'd also be most grateful if you could provide us with a copy of what you

send so that I can keep track here.

Thanks so much for your help.

Regards, Helen
