While the controversy continues with no end in sight, so does the problem of global warming. “Forget about the controversies. We should concentrate on what we can do ourselves to stop global warming,” says Mina Cheah-Foong, managing director of The Body Shop. “We have to remember that in our own small way, all of us contribute to global warming.” With that in mind, The Body Shop, together with the Malaysian Climate Change Group (MCCG) will be conducting a STOP Global Warming campaign from April 22 to May 16. The campaign which will be held in conjunction with Earth Day on April 22, aims to educate the public on what they can do to help check global warming. In a report by MCCG, it was found that carbon dioxide emission from vehicles contributed to 49% of the global warming in the country. As such, the campaign hopes to create awareness among Malaysians on the importance of using alternative means of transportation. Since this is only possible if we have a more efficient and reliable public transportation system, The Body Shop and MCCG are calling on the government to improve the existing system. “We are asking for cleaner and safer buses which do not emit black fumes, and proper linkage between LRT stations and bus stands. Public and feeder buses should leave and arrive on schedule too.” As part of their STOP Global Warming campaign, The Body Shop and MCCG hope to collect 66,000 signatures from the public to lobby for improvement in the public transportation system. The public can sign the petition at any of the 28 Body Shop stores nationwide. One set of petition will be presented to the Transport Ministry, while the other will be sent to The Body Shop regional office in Singapore, where all petitions from the Asia Pacific region will be collected and sent to The Body Shop International in London. Representatives from The Body Shop International and Greenpeace will present the petitions, collected globally, at the 2002 Earth Summit in Johannesburg, South Africa, in September. “Through the petitions, we are asking world leaders to commit their support for renewable energy at the Earth Summit and getting it to the two billion people in the developing world, some of whom are the poorest people on the planet, who have no access to energy for lighting, heat or power.” A bicycle rally will be held on April 20, at the main entrance of Lot 10, Kuala Lumpur, to launch the STOP Global Warming campaign. This will be a family outing which aims to create public awareness on alternative modes of transportation. Registration for the bicycle rally is free. Door gifts worth RM50 each await participants. The cycling route will cover Jalan Bukit Bintang, Jalan Pudu, Jalan Imbi and Jalan Sultan Ismail. The first three participants to reach the finishing line will win Body Shop hampers worth RM300, RM200 and RM100. Soft toys will also be sold to raise funds for MCCG. There are six species available, all of which are on the endangered list due to the destruction of their habitat because of global warming. The toys – seal, turtle, walrus, dolphin, polar bear and penguin – will be going for RM19 each. Those who would like to participate in the bicycle rally on April 20 can fill up a registration form and submit it to any Body Shop outlet in West Malaysia.
