Samy: Five NGOs hampering water transfer project

By ELAN PERUMAL

TANJUNG KARANG: The Japanese Government will give a RM3.8bil loan for the water

transfer project from the east coast to Selangor only if at least five

non-governmental organisations support the plan, Works Minister Datuk Seri S.

Samy Vellu said.

He said none of the NGOs wanted to back the project as they say the environment

would be affected because it involved building two dams.

“The NGOs are the stumbling block to the Government’s efforts to get water

supply from Pahang to Selangor.

“A positive role of the NGOs will help us secure the RM3.8bil loan from the

Japanese Government,” he told reporters after attending a fund-raising dinner

for the MIC’s Asian Institute of Medicine, Science and Technology project.

“Since there will be no backing from NGOs who are strongly against the building

of the dams, there will be no more water in Selangor in about three to four

years,” he said.

Samy Vellu stressed that the project was vital since Selangor would exhaust all

its water resources by 2008.

“Therefore, the project must go on in order to prevent a serious water crisis in

the future,” he added.

He said his ministry would be holding a meeting with the representatives of the

Japanese Government on Monday and hoped it would be a fruitful one.

“Managing water is very expensive for the Government.

“According to the project papers, we plan to get water from three parts of

Pahang to be supplied to all parts of Selangor,” he said.

At the function, Tanjung Karang MIC division chief V. Jagarasan handed over

RM200,000 for the institute.
