Bolivian Director of Biodiversity did not punish a wildlife trafficker

Dear Friends,

The Bolivian Newspaper La Prensa published, a few days ago, an article about

an Ocelot that was being sold illegally in the city of La Paz - Bolivia. The

person who was selling the Ocelot was later arrested by local authorities

for violating the Bolivian Wildlife Protection Law which states that it is

illegal to sell, posses, capture, or commercialize wild animals, especially

endangered species.

Later that same person, Alex Portugal, was released by the " Director of

Biodiversity " in Bolivia, Mr. Mario Baudoin, because according to Mr.

Baudoin, Alex Portugal did not look like a wildlife trafficker. Mr. Baudoin

did not even fine Portugal. Alex Portugal not only violated a Law but he

also abused the young animal. After X-Rays were taken it was found that the

young animal has 5 bone fractures.

This action by Mr. Mario Baudoin has demonstrated his lack of respect for a

Law that he is supposed to uphold.

In protest for this action by Mr. Baudoin, we ask for your help in the

protection of the fauna of Bolivia by sending letters to the President of

Bolivia and other Bolivian Authorities. Wildlife traffickers should be

prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law for their crimes.

Dear President Quiroga,

It has recently come to my attention that a few days ago a wildlife

trafficker was released after violating the Law regarding the Protection of

Wildlife in your country. He also abused a young Ocelot and broke five

bones, which were discovered from X- Rays that were taken. This trafficker

was released by the Director of Biodiversity, Mr. Mario Baudoin, who alleged

that the wildlife trafficker, Alex Portugal, did not look like a " wildlife

trafficker " .

I would like to express my concern and disappointment for the actions taken

by Mr. Baudoin. If the authorities of your country are allowing such a

crimes against wildlife to go unpunished, what kind of example are they

setting for the Bolivian citizens?

I respectfully ask you to intervene immediately in order to:

1.- Protect wildlife in your country from persons like Alex Portugal who

violate the Bolivian law and are not even fined for doing so.

2.- To prosecute Alex Portugal to the fullest extent of the Law.

3.- Corrective Measures for Authorities that fail to uphold the Law.

It is time to send a clear message to people who are capable of

intentionally violating the Law in your country. These crimes against the

Wildlife of Bolivia, must not be tolerated and that there are guaranteed

consequences for those who would show such disregard for the law.

Mr. President, you are in a position to make a difference.
