Guest guest
Elephant-poaching gang leader shot dead after 10 animals killed The leader of an elephant-poaching gang in Kenya has been shot dead after 10 animals were killed. Kenya Wildlife Service says the poachers were armed with AK-47 and G3 rifles. They ambushed a herd of 11 elephants, killing the whole family apart from one adult cow at the end of March. Rangers are tracking the poachers' footprints through Tsavo National Park after they escaped during the shoot-out. The East African Standard says the attack on the elephants is the largest since the service was established in 1989. In a statement, the service said: " The poachers' gang leader was shot and killed. The others turned tail and escaped into the darkness. " The statement said the gang leader killed was a notorious Somali elephant poacher who escaped capture in Kenya during the 1980s. " His elimination will send out a strong message to other poachers that Kenya is indeed very serious about the protection of her elephants, " the statement added.
