Sani Mohamad Isa, the head of the fisheries department of the northeastern Kelantan state, said initial investigations revealed that Thai prawns brought into the country were infected with the " white spot " disease. The disease, which causes premature death in the crustaceans, was capable of totally destroying a pond full of prawns in just 3 months of infection, he told the official Bernama news agency. Sani said the disease, which has no effect on humans, was believed to have been caused by a recent prolonged dry spell and has reportedly hit prawn breeders from southern Thailand and Indonesia. The deadly virus has resulted in losses of almost 2 million ringgit (USD 526 316) after some 400 000 fry from 87 breeding ponds in Malaysia's northwestern Kedah state were recently infected. -- ProMED-mail <promed [White spot disease (WSD) of penaeid shrimp is characterised by high and rapid mortality, accompanied by gross signs in moribund shrimp of white, initially circular, inclusions or spots in the cuticle, sometimes accompanied by overall red body coloration. The causative agent is white spot syndrome virus (WSSV) or white spot virus (WSV), a double-stranded DNA virus of presently unknown relationship that is potentially lethal to most of the commercially cultivated penaeid shrimp species. WSD outbreaks were first reported from farmed _Penaeus japonicus_ in Japan in 1993, followed by its recording in other Asian countries. WSD is one of the 3 crustacean diseases which are reportable to the OIE.
