Guest guest
South China Morning Post http://hongkong.scmp.com/hknews/ZZZMZTG8GZC.html Monday, April 8, 2002 by VICTORIA BUTTON Activists campaigning against shark fin soup are distributing 100,000 graphic postcards depicting Chinese weddings littered with mutilated dead sharks. The campaign postcards, designed by advertising firm Saatchi & Saatchi for pressure group Sea Shepherd, are being given away in pubs and cafes. " As many as 40 sharks are killed for every Chinese wedding. Give the sharks a chance. Give up shark fin soup, " the slogan says. Sea Shepherd's Asia education co-ordinator, Grant Pereira, said sharks were being killed at unsustainable rates, endangering the future of the species. He said in Asia, shark fins were eaten while the rest of the animal was often discarded. Traditionally, shark fin soup is served as the third or fourth course at a Chinese wedding banquet. The postcards are also being distributed in Singapore and Malaysia. Other groups which have raised concerns in Hong Kong regarding shark fishing include the World Wide Fund For Nature Hong Kong, WildAid and Traffic East Asia.
