Friends;

The day has finally come. Environment Minister David Anderson will

reintroduce the Species at Risk Act on Monday, February 18th. The

improvements made by the federal Environment Committee will have been

gutted. Though long and hard has been the battle to protect Canada’s

critters in crisis, now is not the time to let this atrocity go

unchallenged. For the sake of all of our battles, valley by valley,

watershed-by-watershed to protect nature in this beautiful country, we need

to have in our toolbox a strong Species at Risk Act. Please take a moment to

send this short Action Alert on to your friends, membership and colleagues

and ask that they visit http://www.wildcanada.net and launch one last volley

against the indifference of the federal Liberal government to the

environment and our endangered plants and animals.

Government to Gut Species Bill

Liberal government needs to be sent a clear message

Bill C-5, the Species at Risk Act, is being debated in the House of Commons,

starting Monday February 18. The Bill, as amended by the Environment

Committee, had broad stakeholder support. The Committee's version of the

bill, while not as strong as many Canadians would have liked, was a

significant improvement on the original bill, and reached an historic

compromise on the issues of habitat protection and science-based listing.

The government, however, is seeking to gut the key improvements made by the

Environment Committee. Though not unexpected, the breadth of the reversal is

shocking. Nearly every positive amendment reached by the all-party committee

has been reversed, leaving the Species at Risk Act without teeth, gums, or a

mouth to put them in. The Liberal’s Bill will be weak and ineffective at

protecting endangered species like the grizzly bear, monarch butterfly,

killer whale and more than 380 others.

You can send a strong, clear message to Canada’s Prime Minister by visiting

http://www.wildcanada.net and adding your comments to an on-line fax and

sending to Jean Chretien. Our database will tailor the letter so it is sent

to your MP if you are Canadian. A summary of the which Committee amendments

the Liberal government has reversed can be found there as well.

Please pass this message onto your friends.

Their voice is needed now.
