Guest guest
Please cross-post. Thanks. - <vanessaw <CFN Tuesday, February 12, 2002 7:08 PM [CFN:2642] Urgent! PLEASE HELP WDCS OPPOSE ORCA CAPTURES OFF RUSSIA! Dear List, Would you be willing to be part of a coalition of international groups opposed to the capture of orcas (killer whales) in Russia? As you may know, a permit has recently been granted in Russia to capture ten orcas off eastern Russia, we suspect for export abroad. These orcas are little-known and the capture permits have been issued without consulting orca scientists. In 2001, attempts were made to capture orcas from East Russian waters for captive display at the Port of Nagoya Public Aquarium (PNPA) in Japan. The PNPA continues to express its desire to display wild-caught orcas. We are concerned that other aquariums may also be interested in the capture and display of these orcas. Due to weather conditions, we suspect that the captures may be attempted in May or June 2002. In the early 1990s, many of you supported a similar move to stop the orca captures in Iceland - a campaign that worked. We need your help to be able to do this again! STATEMENT AGAINST ORCA CAPTURES I/we oppose the current permit for five orca captures in Russia. Very little is known about the species in far east Russian waters and experts have not been consulted on the conservation or welfare implications of the proposed removal. I/we also oppose all orca captures under any circumstances. If you represent an organisation, it would also be helpful if you could tell us how many members/ supporters you have worldwide. Signed and dated [important: Please give your name, position, organisation's name and number of supporters worldwide.] **Please circulate widely, and return sign-ons to WDCS as soon as possible, as we hope to present the Statement later in February. Thank you very much!
