Guest guest
China Daily http://www1.chinadaily.com.cn/cndy/2002-02-06/55704.html XI'AN Thirty-one owls seized by local police from illegal traders were released into the wild yesterday in Xi'an, the capital of Northwest China's Shaanxi Province. The owls, which receive second-grade protection under State laws, were found on January 28 when they were being transported illegally on a bus stopped by local police. The police seized a total of 51 live owls and 72 dead ones and arrested six criminal suspects. The live owls were sent to a bird garden in Xi'an Xingqinggong Park, because of their bad health and injuries due to the bad treatment they received from the illegal traders, according to a local police source. After eight days of careful treatment, 31 owls have recovered and can live in the nature, said park worker Dong Hai. However, six out of the 51 owls died because of serious injuries and another 14 will have to stay in the garden for further treatment.
