Guest guest
China Daily http://www1.chinadaily.com.cn/cndy/2002-02-06/55707.html (XIN DINGDING) 02/06/2002 Kabul Zoo in Afghanistan will probably have two lions from China in May after the death of its remaining big cat, Marjan. Sources with the China Wildlife Conservation Association said it will give another lion to Kabul Zoo in addition to the one the Beijing Badaling Safari World announced earlier this week that it would donate. " The lions will bring our friendship to the people of Afghanistan and also show our attitude to protecting wildlife, " said Chen Runsheng, the association's deputy secretary-general. He said the association will donate a young lion to make a couple with the one sent by the safari world. " It will make more possible to realize our hope of seeing our lion couple have babies in Afghanistan soon, " said he. Marjan, who was to many the symbol of Afghanistan's struggle for peace, died in Kabul Zoo on January 26 at the age of 23, probably of liver failure. The Beijing Badaling Safari World Co Ltd moved quickly to express its willingness to donate a lion to Kabul Zoo as support. But both parties have not decided which young lion to play the role of " a friendship envoy " yet. The safari world is likely to choose a lion aged between 1.5 to 2 years old as the envoy, since younger beasts adapt more easily to new environments and cost less to raise than bigger ones. Abdul Basir Hotak, charge d'affaires of the Embassy of the Interim Government of Afghanistan, called the donations a wonderful proposal.
