Guest guest
Though established some ten years ago, it's only within the last year or so that the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals - Nepal (SPCAN) has begun operating as a viable animal welfare agency in the Himalayan kingdom. Further, after redefining its management and intensifying its commitment, the SPCAN opened its first veterinary clinic in Gaurighat, Pashupati, Kathmandu in September last year, employing three staff, including a full-time vet, Dr Sarad Yadav. The SPCAN clinic is open seven days and treats large and small animals, pets and strays. As much as possible, Dr Yadav and casual volunteer vets also attend to animals on the streets, especially those too large (such as cattle) to be transported to the clinic. Friends of the SPCAN, a support group to raise funds and awareness in the local community has recently been formed by a group of Nepalese and foreigners living in Kathmandu. A schools program is also run by the SPCAN and a major birth-control program is in the planning. Major support for the SPCAN has so far been kindly provided by: the US and Australian offices of the Humane Society International (including sponsorship of two health/education programmes and camps); SnuggleMe.com (US); and the RSPCA (UK). Various other forms of support are co-ordinated and supplied by The Tara project Australia, which advises and promotes the SPCAN, and enlists support of international agencies and individuals everywhere. For more information on SPCAN, contact it directly at spca_nepal, or email Mandy Lamkin of The Tara Project Australia at TheTaraprojectAustralia For The Friends of the SPCAN email lucia
