Shiga town illegally caught monkeys

OTSU (Kyodo) The town government of Aito, Shiga

Prefecture, illegally captured 11 wild Japanese

macaques and illegally gave some of the protected

animals to a state-run university as experimental

animals, the Shiga Prefectural Government said Friday.

The prefectural government said Aito town officials

captured one macaque monkey in June last year without

permission from the prefectural governor and captured

10 more for an ecological survey between July last

year and January.

The town gave five of the captured monkeys to the

Shiga University of Medical Science as test animals

without obtaining a permit from the governor, as

required by the Law Concerning Protection of Wildlife

and Game, prefectural officials said. A permit from

the governor is also required for animals to be used

in experiments.

The prefectural government said it has ordered the

town to have the university return the animals to the

wild.

Aito town officials said they misinterpreted the law

and will follow the governor's guidance. University

officials said they had not used the monkeys for any

experiments and plan to return the monkeys to the town

office soon.

According to the prefectural government, two of the

five monkeys given to the university have died from

injuries they suffered during their capture.
