This weekend the rally against dog meat in

Daehang-no in Seoul brought together more than 100

people from various groups, including anti-vivisection

and vegetarian groups. Every big media station in

Korea was there as well as a Japanese tv station. The

rally was an excellent chance for anti-dog and cat

meat activists in Korea to get together to pressure

the government to back away from it's plans to

legalize dog meat. Afterwards a vegetarian meal was

served and discussion had between participants in the

rally. Remarkably, though, after the huge media

spectacle that was presented, and ample amounts of

Korean media there to cover it, this remarkable event

didn't merit even a blurb on Korean tv or a line in

the newspapers. Either what is happening is official

government censorship or else is a kind of implicit

censorship that the media imposes on itself if

something happens that is inconsistent with the

official public line. Whatever it is, the issue could

very easily slip soon away from simply " foreigners vs

Koreans " to " animal activists vs dog meat eaters " . No

matter how the government tries to contain it, perhaps

this weekend will occation a new strengthening of the

fight against dog and cat eating in Korea and a

democratization of the problem of animal abuse

generally in this country.
