Guest guest
England to Ban Domestic Animal Fur Imports by Elizabeth Mavro A British government spokesperson recently announced that the importation of domestic animal pelts from China will soon be outlawed. " The Government agrees that the import, export and trade in domestic cat and dog fur is abhorrent, " said Foreign Office Minister Baroness Symons of Vernham Dean, who also said that the ban would be very similar to the one imposed by the United States in 1998. " The law will have to be changed to bring about a ban, which could be on the statute book by September 2002, " stated another Foreign Office official. " Measures that could be taken to enforce it could include DNA checks on fur on sale by trading standards inspectors. " Recent deoxyribonucleic acid testing conducted by The Humane Society of the United States on a fur coat collar sold in a store in London's West End revealed that the collar contained dog fur. The test result supported claims by The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) that up to two million cats and dogs are slaughtered in China each year to provide fur products to stores in Europe. " There is no doubt that cat and dog fur is used in clothing on sale in the high street, and we welcome all moves to stop this trade, " said an RSPCA spokesperson. http://www.anc.org/pets/pets_article.cfm?identifier=2002_0125_ban © 2002 Animal News Center, Inc.
