It is the first time that wholesale markets did not sell all their whale meat since Japan resumed its " research hunting " of whales in fiscal 1987. According to the Institute of Cetacean Research, Japan caught 440 minke whales in the Antarctic Ocean in fiscal 2000. Wholesale markets put 725 tons of meat on sale from July through August, but around 220 tons remained as of the end of August. One of the factors contributing to the poor sales was that whale meat prices were much higher than those for other fisheries products, which have fallen recently, institute officials said.
