Guest guest
please, forward widely - thanks! Dear activists, in Halle, a medium-sized town in the Sachsen-Anhalt province, a decision is scheduled for 01-30-2002 to ban and punish feeding of stray animals. The politicians over there say, it's for " hygienic " purposes and for to clear the city of stray animals in the long run. International protest would be excellent to show them, that no evil deed against sentient beings goes without critics. (animal activists are watching you:-))) If you can spare a few minutes, please drop a few lines on behalf of the Halle stray animals. I collected some facts, arguments and addresses for you - see below. If there is only little time to spare, please, do concentrate on a letter to the mayor - she is the responsible person. Thank you very much in advance. Kind regards, Charlotte Kinnewig- Germany - A few arguments against the ban: 1. Without food and medical care provided the stray population (in Germany that means: cats) cannot survive in a healthy state - it often consists of animals dumped by their owners and not prepared to lead a life on their own. Therefore many animals will become ill, will starve, will breed(!), because then there will be no one to look after spaying/neutering measurements for the ones becoming more and more shy. Finally, they will die of illness or starvation. Then - see above - there is a really " hygienic problem " . And: there is a rodent problem, too. But - I may ask you - is there any " hygienic problem " with healthy cats? There is a further problem: the cats having suffered and died soon will be replaced by other cats and individuals of other species - freshly:-( dumped individuals, cats wanting to improve their living conditions from other areas, and so on. A " circulus vitiosus " - all of us do know, but the politicians (in Halle) don't - so it seems to me. 2. What does it mean for a stray-feeder to see his/her animals suffer? To be punished (50 Euro, some 45 $ US) for giving care? What sort of society will develop, if sentient beings are disposed of as mere " things " ? What does it mean for a child seeing a hungry cat and being told of " hygienic problems " and feeding bans? I really hope I could give you an idea of the problems in Halle..
