Please use the sample letter below, or better still, use your own words to

dogs and cats from the hands of butchers.

Dear Mr. Bush,

I am writing in the hope that you will make the most of this rare

opportunity to press for significant improvements in South Korea's animal

welfare system.

I understand that many Koreans are saying it's an insult to them to insult

their tradition but just because something is a tradition it doesn't mean it's

right (take the head shrinking practices of some Borneo tribes for example).

Tradition or not, dog-eating has no place in modern society, and it can only

improve Korea's image to abolish the cat and dog-meat trades.Times change and

Korea is an upwardly mobile country with little poverty, and it isn't necessary

any more to eat dog meat when there are other foods available. As human

civilization and cultures evolve, many nations have shed so-called " traditions "

that are rooted in cruelty, suffering and subjugation. Isn't it time Korea

follows suit?

Just because I can sympathize with the horrific way these cats and dogs die

and hate to think of them suffering like that, it doesn't mean I'm insulting

Koreans. This is not a race thing at all - it's an empathy thing. Being the

ruling species we should treat other species that also inhabit the planet with

more empathy. .

Rather than regulating the farming and slaughtering processes it is the

total and complete abolition of the dog and cat meat trade that needs to happen.

Many of us have considered the former approach (i.e. regulation), mistakenly

believing this will spare the animals from being tortured, but have concluded

that regulating the slaughter of dogs and cats will not ensure humane treatment,

but will instead strip them of any chance at being accepted and regarded as

" companion animals. "

Please be a catalyst in ending this horrific practice.

Yours sincerely

Dears Sirs,

I am writing to you to try and persuade you to abolish the practice of

eating cats and dogs. I understand that many Koreans are saying it's an insult

to them to insult their tradition but just because something is a tradition it

doesn't mean it's right (take the head shrinking practices of some Borneo tribes

for example). Tradition or not, dog-eating has no place in modern society, and

it can only improve Korea's image to abolish the cat and dog-meat trades.Times

change and Korea is an upwardly mobile country with little poverty, and it isn't

necessary any more to eat dog meat when there are other foods available. As

human civilization and cultures evolve, many nations have shed so-called

" traditions " that are rooted in cruelty, suffering and subjugation. Isn't it

time Korea follows suit?

Just because I can sypathise with the horrific way these cats and dogs

die and hate to think of them suffering like that, it doesn't mean I'm insulting

Koreans. This is not a race thing at all - it's an empathy thing. Being the

ruling species, all of us should treat the other species with which we share the

planet with more empathy.

Despite the 1984 Ministry of Health law banning dog-meat soup and the 1991

law enacted to protect dogs and cats from torture and slaughter, dogs and cats

are still not safe in South Korea.

Koreans are well educated, intelligent people, and most know better than to

believe the myth that dog meat and cat juice are healthful, but it is that

minority who are giving Koreans a bad name.
