Govindasamy Agoramoorthy & Minna J. Hsu, Department of Biological Sciences, National Sun Yat-sen University, P.O. Box 59-157, Kaohsiung 80424, Taiwan. The on-going illegal trade and uninterrupted habitat destruction has been forcing Asian primates to local extinction in many countries. The number of confiscated as well as abandoned pet primates in Asia has been increasing in recent years, which boost over crowding and damage the quality of life for primates in captive facilities such as zoos, ?ecreational parks, and rehabilitation centers. As a result, the basic principals of animal welfare such as, freedom from hunger and thirst, freedom from thermal and physical discomfort, freedom from pain, disease and injury, freedom to express normal behavior, and freedom from fear and distress are being ignored. Public concern for zoo primates' welfare is evident in many countries in Asia. It is important to understand the ethical and animal welfare problems facing captive primates in Asian zoos today in order to make significant improvement in managing them in captivity. This symposium will discuss issues concerning captive primates in Asian facilities including topics such as illegal trade, fate of confiscated animals, dumping of rescued animal in zoos to increase over crowding, captive animals in distress as a result of poor management, and ways to improve standards of ethics and welfare for captive primates. Interested authors wishing to contribute to this symposium can contact either G. Agoramoorthy (agoram) or Minna Hsu (hsumin). *** Send FREE video emails in Mail! http://promo./videomail/
