Korean dogs, and the backlash

When fighting a campaign, no one should be too

surprised to encounter a bit of opposition! In fact,

it can be a good sign - it means you're being taken

seriously. It definitely shouldn't put us off.

However, a little humility doesn't come amiss,

especially from the West, where attitudes to animal

welfare are mind-bendingly selective.

'Culture' is the last bastion of a bad excuse for

something. We live in a globalised society and we're

all becoming more and more involved with each other on

a day-to-day basis, and local practices everywhere are

bound to come under wider scrutiny. It's the price you

pay for global subsidies and a wider export market and

all the things everyone seems to want these days.

Having said that, let's keep in mind that the campaign

to protect dogs in Korea from abuse is being

spearheaded by Koreans, and perhaps we should try to

find out from Kaps what's an appropriate and effective

response to the latest backlash; (haven't heard from

them lately?) and also how to avoid making things

harder for them than they are already...Kaps has to

tread a very fine line as it is.

Hope I'm not speaking out of turn!

Ley.
