Australia - Leading the Insanity

http://www.kindplanet.org/vhd/australia2002.html

We posted in December and included a request that you all be aware of and

respond to Australia's current plans to release RHD in food baits. We

actually received the Australia portion of the post back from a person not

on our mailing list. S/he copied it and sent to several recipients, also not

on our mailing list, asking all to write a letter to Australia.

It’s nice to know that we’re reaching someone. Actually we knew that before

as Shaene Steinauer, Florida’s State Representative for the Coalition, sent

us Australia’s response to her letter.

Dear Mr Steinaur,

I refer to your recent e-mail concerning the possible registration of RCD in

bait form by the National Registration Authority.

Your concerns have been noted. All relevant submissions will be taken into

account when the NRA is in a position to make a final decision on the RCD

bait application. Before the NRA can register an agricultural or veterinary

chemical product, it must be satisfied that the product would not:

be an undue hazard to the safety of people exposed to it during its handling

or people using anything containing its residues; and

be likely to have an effect that is harmful to human beings; and

be likely to have an unintended effect that is harmful to animals, plants or

things or to the environment; and

unduly prejudice trade or commerce between Australia and places outside

Australia.

I am aware of several complex issues raised in your e-mail. These and other

matters were fully canvassed by the NRA in the application for registration

of the RCD Injection when the public was invited to make submissions

pursuant to the NRA Gazette Notice of 6 February 1996. That product was

subsequently registered on 16 September 1996.

In respect of your call for a public inquiry on the RCD bait application,

the NRA has not yet decided whether it will pursue such an approach. If the

NRA does call for public submissions, a notice will be published in the NRA

Gazette.

Yours sincerely,

Max Darvill

We wonder what they would say if 30,000 American breeders, (yes that’s ARBA’

s figure), and that would only include those who are ARBA members, and five

million U.S. pet Rabbit caretakers were to write a letter to Australia

saying that we have no intentions of coming to Australia until this insanity

stops. And yes, 5,000000 is the number of Pet Rabbits AVMA, (American

Veterinary Medical Association), gives. That in the meantime we’d rather

spend our tourist dollars in Afghanistan than in a country that is involved

in the release of a bio-warfare agent of which little is known. Now if such

were to happen, one should not count on a response that makes sense. We

haven’t seen much sense come out of the Australian government when it comes

to RHD.

If one studies the science that came out of the CSIRO regarding RHD it is

amazing at the level of stupidity. It leads one to wonder if credentials in

Australia are given to only those who have a certificate of stupidity.

Are we alone in this? Hardly. In speaking of the work of these officials Dr

David Matson of the Center for Pediatric Research made the following

statement;

" After just a year of exposure to the RHDV release program I am finding it

hard to take the documents provided by the Applicant Group seriously. The

Application Document and other documents are so full of half- truths,

oversights, convoluted logic, inconsistencies, ignored literature, etc. that

trying to comment on all the inadequacies is beyond anyone’s life desire. "

Where is Dr. Matson coming from? If you haven’t had an opportunity to do so,

check out his re-evaluation of CSIRO’s research. Research that supposedly

" proved " RHD was safe.

If you don’t have time for that, at least check out this small segment from

a letter addressing CISRO’s claims.

We received a copy of Dr. Alvin Smith’s response to Australia current plans.

Marguerite Wegner attempted to cross post this to the VHD Info/Pam Alley

moderated VHD mailing list. Once again Pam refused to post a view of science

opposed to hers. This time, Coalition Co-Founder diane of The Sanctuary sent

an email to Pam requesting that she allow the post. Pam ignored all of it.

No reason why you shouldn’t read it though. It offers a glimpse of a

scientist we quote quite often. Who, by the way, has given the fight against

RHD far more of his time than a lot of Rabbit People have. If time permits

nothing else, do Read This.

And by the way, it’s still important that we all write letters to Australia.

It takes one tourist coming in contact with a bait, coming home, walking

into your workplace…

To get the address and important info go to Marguerite’s site.

" I am the voice of the voiceless;

Through me the dumb shall speak, Till the deaf world's ear be made to hear

The wrongs of the wordless weak.

And I am my brother's keeper;

And I will fight his fight;

And speak the word for the beast and bird

Till the world sets things right. "
