Guest guest
I think that the idea of legalizing and bringing the dog meat trade under some kind of control is a very tempting option for people to believe right now. I know that if I were in the west looking at the theoretical side of the issue it seems sound that all animals are the same and that reforming the slaughter methods is a good first step. The problem is that those promoting change in the Korean government: are doing so only because the issue has come to a head, have promoted no public discussion on what " humane slaughter " may be and why it is preferable to the present state, have no will to enforce any laws, and are themselves more interested in pulling off a double victory - gaining some kind of legitimacy and expanding the dog meat trade, including ideas of exporting dog meat. It is an unsavoury situation any way you look at it. Can we really get dog meat banned? Maybe not, probably even if we did there would still be a huge underground market and no one willing to stop it. The public have been whipped into such a state of frenzy these days that no one dares speak against this " cultural icon " . The best thing we can probably hope to accomplish is to help those growing number of Koreans who feel uneasy about it to speak out and to promote the goal that will help all animals in Korea - an end to dog meat. In any case we shouldn't trust the government who talks reform out of the english side of their mouth and decries foreign imperialists with their Korean side. From my perspective this issue is as much one as censorship and public control as one of protecting animals. If anyone out there is in Korea and is interested in this issue please contact me.
