<Please Forward This to as Many Animal-Rights Groups as You Can>.

This is from the Dec./Jan. Holiday 2001 Edition of the Chicagoland Tails, a free

Pet Newspaper in the Chicago Area, reprinted in it's entirety.

From the Law & Advocacy Column:

Thanks to your efforts, thousands of protest letters have poured into the

Federation Internationale de Football Association (RFA) President Joseph

Blatter's offices in Switzerland, urging him to use his power to stop the

slaughter of dogs and cats in South Korea or face a world-wide boycott of the

World Cup 2002 games. As a result, Mr. Blatter has pledged his support to help

end animal cruelties in South Korea, and to help raise South Korea's poor

international image.

In a November 6, 2001 media release issued from RFA's Swiss headquarters, it

is stated that Mr. Blatter " and RFA Vice-President Dr. Chung Mong-Joon of Korea

have personally intervened in an effort to put a stop to cruelty to animals in

Korea. " Yet in a November 12, 2001 report from the BBC online, Dr. Chung is

quoted as saying, " There is no need for RFA to get involved " and " there is

nothing to worry about. "

In addition to his post as RFA Vice-President, Dr. Chung is a member of the

Korean Parliament and heir to the Hyundai Coproration fortune. It is our firm

belief that he is being pressured by strong, pro-dog meat lobbying within Korea

to support the legalization of the dog-meat trade.

In response to animal activist's attempts to stop the widespread torture and

slaughter of dogs and cats in Korea, Korean officials have argued that these are

merely disguised attempts to westernize Koreans and strip them of their

" cultural heritage " . Not suprisingly, they never mention that many individuals

supporting the cause, including Dr. Yoon, the founder of Anti Dog-Meat

Headquarters, are Korean, and furthermore, are Koreans who refute the claim of

dog and cat eating as " long-standing cultural traditions. "

These myths are perpetuated by the likes of Korean Assemblyman. Rep. Kim,

Hong Shin, who continues to press for legislation of dog meat for consumption.

Please write to tell him you are not fooled by the " traditional food " myth:

letters begin arriving).

As the World Cup 2002 draws nearer, the media spotlight will continue to shine

on South Korea. Please take advantage of this opportunity to voice your concerns

for animals in South Korea. Continue sending your letters to:

Joseph Blatter, President RFA,

P.O. Box 85,

8030 Zurich, Switzerland

Urge him to continue negotiations with Korean officials to end the torture and

slaughter of dogs and cats in South Korea.

Also, please send your strong protest letters to:

Dr. Chung,Mong-Joon

Hyundai Headquarters

140-2 Kye-dong, Chongru-ku,

Seoul, South Korea

Dr. Chung can also be reached by email at:

ir

Please urge him to keep his commitment to " enforce existing laws that forbid

mistreatment of animals " , as pledged in the RFA press release on November 6,

2001, and relinquish his support for dog eaters.

Through our concerted efforts, we can make Korea

a safe place for all animals. Don't give up the fight!
