Kangaroo slaughter imminent in Queensland

MASSIVE COMMERCIAL KANGAROO SLAUGHTER QUOTE TO BE DECLARED FOR QUEENSLAND

 

New Federal 'Environment' Minister David Kemp is understood to be about to

'sign off' on the 2002 commercial kangaroo kill figures.

 

Contacts in Queensland have advised that in Queensland alone the permitted

commercial slaughter figures are about to increase from 2,805,000 (in 1999

and in 2000) to a massive 6,100,000 for 2002 - a 117% increase!

 

This increase means that Queensland alone will account for more permitted k

angaroo deaths than the total national quota for 2001 of some 5.5 million.

 

Animals Australia Executive Director, Glenys Oogjes, said today; " The Austr

alian community are being deliberately misled. The commercial kangaroo indu

stry works hard to characterise the kangaroo as a 'pest' so that their indu

stry will thrive. The truth is very different; recent scientific evidence s

hows kangaroos have little impact on agricultural production, and red kanga

roos are being killed at an unsustainable rate.

 

" I will be bitterly disappointed if Minister Kemp buckles under pressure fr

om the kangaroo killing industry and signs away the lives of some 3.3 milli

on more of our kangaroos', Ms Oogjes concluded.

I understand you may soon give your permission for a large increase in the

commercial kangaroo slaughter quota in Queensland.

 

I urge you to please reconsider this because I do not believe such an incre

ase is warranted, and that it would be terrible if so many kangaroos were s

ubjected to the brutality of the profit-driven kangaroo shooting industry.

 

The commercial kangaroo industry works hard to characterise the kangaroo as

a 'pest' so that their industry will thrive. Recent scientific evidence s

hows kangaroos have little impact on agricultural production, and red kanga

roos are being killed at an unsustainable rate.

 

In addition I urge you to not allow this massive increase because almost ha

lf of Queensland is now drought-declared and an increase in the quota would

mean more kangaroos will die next year than in any other year. If this wa

s to occur it would surely be remembered as a bleak mark in Australian

history.

 

The lives of over 6 million kangaroos are in your hands. Please protect

them.
