Tristan Reid's mail on the trade in wild birds in China

(and it's not only there of course) interested me; but I hadn't got around

to

responding to it yet. I also wanted time to think about it. Ian Hinze

also shed a lot of light on the matter.

Tristan also wrote to me privately and I am sure will not mind me

quoting him:

< ..... >

" I realise that PROACT only deals with European (and periphery)

countries, but I am sure that some of these countries import these birds

trapped in China (this is an assumption).

< ..... >

Sale restricted to the local market is hardly lucrative enough - and the

Chinese have a hard head for business. Perhaps Ian could bring us up to

date on the second part?

Proact will probably 'go international' as soon as I can get more

practical support. We already have coordinators abroad (and a couple of

likely targets); but I'm personally booked up in terms of capacity at

present.

< ..... >

" I would be interested if you knew of an organisation that could help

put pressure on the Chinese government to try and put a stop to this

despicable wild bird trade. "

< ..... >

A difficult one. I am sure (I know) that we could find organisations in

the Far East; but pressurising the Chinese government to do ANYTHING

has about as much chance as a fart in a thunderstorm. Without getting

deeply political (let's not in this forum) one only has to think about

large-scale summary executions, etc,. to get depressed about the

survival of nature. And what our politicians will do to get a contract

signed...

The idea of getting at the clients is a good one though. So lets look at

the bird trade  _out of China_  Anyone any ideas; or even better,

concrete infomation? A bit of help/debate in this forum won't hurt (or

activate a 'China' filter - to be on the safe side 'wild birds' ;-)
