Guest guest
Dear chemoheterotrophs, This is to thank Bunny (Marguerite) for her e-mail and for reminding us that Christmas, and most other religious or traditional festivities, incorporate cruelty to all life. So, why am I addressing this to chemoheterotrophs? All life can be categorised in terms of an organism's carbon and energy source: energy can be obtained from light reactions (phototrophs), from chemical oxidation (of organic or inorganic substances) (chemotrophs); the carbon for cellular synthesis can be obtained from CO2 (autotrophs) or from pre-formed organic compounds (heterotrophs). Combining these categories, we get the four basic life forms: chemoheterotrophs (animals, fungi), photoautotrophs (example plants), photoheterotrophs and chemoautotrophs. In bacteria we find all four basic life types. So next time you see a child plucking a leaf thoughtlessly from a tree of plant, please take the time to teach them that the leaf is the home of thousands of microorganisms that can't be seen with the naked eye. As vegetarians we have reverence for all life, seen and unseen, and thank our Mother Earth for the gifts which we take sometimes without remembering how truly wonderful these are. Best wishes for every day in your life Roger
