Guest guest
http://www.asahi.com/english/national/K2001112600223.html Cosmetics go farm-animal free The Asahi Shimbun Concern about mad cow disease is forcing cosmetics manufacturers to switch from farm animal-based compounds to ingredients derived from fish or plants. Japan's leading cosmetics manufacturer Shiseido Co. plans to extend restrictions on the use of some beef-based ingredients to cover all farm animal materials, including pig or chicken products. Cosmetics manufacturers first began cutting back on beef products last December when the government issued a directive banning the use of any ingredients derived from cow placentas. That forced Shiseido to replace beef-derived collagen with fish products. Shiseido now says that it plans to root out any farm animal-based compounds from products, and replace them with ingredients taken either from fish or plants. Materials of which the ingredient or country of origin is unclear will also be replaced. Kanebo Ltd., another leading cosmetics manufacturer, is under pressure to follow suit. After last December's directive, Kanebo stopped using materials derived from cow placentas in its skin-whitening product, switching to a combination of pig placenta derivative and vitamin C instead. Now it is considering using just vitamin C. ``We don't think it's dangerous,'' a Kanebo spokesperson said. ``But consumer pressure is mounting.'' The Japan Cosmetic Industry Association warned, however, that complicated distribution channels for raw materials sometimes make it difficult to tell whether a raw material is derived from animals or plants.
